Concert and workshop: Les Enfants du Paradis – a Musical Journey Above the Clouds

A magical study of spirituality, time and clouds from the European Commission award-winning project 'Invitation to Composers'. The visionary power of Olivier Messiaen’s 'Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps', written when he was a prisoner-of war and based on St John's Apocalypse, inspires composers in Scotland, Mexico, Norway and Romania. It will be played along with Blunt’s 'Serenades', Torre’s award-winning 'Clouds', Skjelbred’s 'Crystals' and Carneci’s 'Quatuor pour Marguerite' – an evening of ecstasy, bird song, rainbows, dreams of the abyss of time, chaos, wrath, peace and harmonious silence. Pre-concert public workshop.

About the composers:

Saint-Saëns (1835 - 1921) was born in Paris and had one of the longest careers in music history, stretching from Beethoven’s traditions to the modernism of the 20th century. In his lifetime he was acclaimed as a genius. He had been a child prodigy comparable to Mozart and remained a most conscientious performer (organist and pianist) until the end. At 86, he was still practising the piano every day and a short while before his death in Algeria, he played the piano part in the Septet in a concert in Paris. Sometimes labeled the French Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns had a gift for mixing instrumental timbres and creating colourful textures.

Lucian Zbarcea (1983 - ) was born in Bucharest, Romania. He studied piano and composition at the National University of Music and, following his graduation, was offered a scholarship by the Indonesian Government to study at the High Institute of Arts in Dempasar in Bali. Zbarcea won several important prizes in national competitions and some of his works are influenced by harmonic and rhythmic elements of traditional Indonesian music.

Ivan Božičević (1961 - ) was born in Belgrade and graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Music where he also obtained a Master's degree. He attended courses in Darmstadt and studied the organ at the Frankfurt Music Academy. He received numerous composition awards and he taught counterpoint, analysis and harmony at the Belgrade Faculty of Music and at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. He now lives in Croatia and is a founder member of the Split Society for Contemporary Music.

Uberto Pieroni (1952 - ) was born in Correggio, Italy. He graduated from the Arigo Boito Music Academy in Parma with a degree in choral music and choir conducting. Later he attended courses in music analysis and composition with Franco Donatoni, Aldo Clementi, Witold Lutoslawsky and André La Porte.
He won several international composition prizes and is president of the Città di Reggio Emilia Orchestra and Choir, and of the Ferruccio Tagliavini Cultural Association. Pieroni is head of the Information Laboratory at the Institute of Higher Music Studies in Reggio Emilia, where he also teaches recording techniques and music information technology.

Rodney Waschka II (1958) was born in Memphis, USA. He received his doctorate from the University of North Texas and also studied at the Institute of Sonology in the Netherlands Royal Conservatoire. He is a Professor of Arts Studies at North Carolina University where he teaches composition, computer music, and directs the Arts NOW Series. Waschka's works are recorded on American, Portuguese and Canadian labels and published by Borik Press and American Composers Editions. His music has been promoted worldwide by the National Endowment for the Arts, The North Carolina Arts Council, the Fundacion Valparaiso (Spain) and the Texas Composers’ Forum.

CLUJ-NAPOCA

Gheoghe Dima Music Academy, Str. Ion Bratianu Nr.25

Concert at 7.30pm.

Pre-concert workshop with British composer Drew Wilson at 5.30pm

For our first performance of the year in Romania, we have chosen the fourth most populous city as our venue. Castrum Clus or Claudiopolis as it was called in Roman times and Klausenberg under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Cluj-Napoca was Transylvania’s artistic and cultural centre under its many incarnations. This legacy is ingrained through its 185-year-old Musical conservatoire, in what is now Romania’s media capital.

In association with the city’s Toamna Muzicala Clujeana Festival we also celebrate the work of the late Romanian-born composer György Ligeti. Born in Târnăveni, Ligeti rose to become one of the Music Academy’s most celebrated graduates. He is best known internationally for scoring the films of Stanley Kubrick, amongst them, The Shining (1980). Adding to our series of pre-concert workshops, this unifying project finds its place in a diverse, historic and artistic setting in picturesque Transylvania, with the memory of those who captured Cluj’s spirit.

The continuation of our “A European Odyssey” tour presents us to official, artistic and academic institutions in Paris. We open with a pre-concert talk on a selection of contemporary works influenced by Messiaen’s landmark piece Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps in the beautiful Palais de Béhague of the Romanian Embassy. The following concert takes place at the hall named in honour of the legendary pianist Alfred Cortot and belonging to the pre-eminent Ecole Normale where the great Romanian violinist, pianist and composer George Enescu had been a teacher. This unique music legacy provides inspiration and interest for our composition project. The final concert will take place in the elegant concert hall of Cité Internationale des Arts where, as a prelude, we will hold an international Composers’ Forum in partnership with the composition department of Université Paris 8.
